Urban Gardening a Novel Response

by Sem. Geowen A. Porcincula, CM

Climate change, environmental degradation, high prices of basic goods, and job security are just a few of the challenges we face almost every single day. Mindful of these “signs of the time”, the Santuario de San Vicente de Paul took up the challenge of raising critical questions but also looking for practical “doable” solutions to how we, as a community, could contribute in the promotion of care for the environment, a healthy lifestyle and an alternative source of income. After a series of meetings and reflection, the Santuario settled on the idea of  Urban Gardening as a response to these pressing concerns.

That project idea has become a reality with the active partnership of the office of Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, Brgy. Tandang Sora and St. Vincent Seminary. The St. Vincent Seminary Complex provided the space for the “Seedling Bank” and the vegetable garden as well. The seeds were provided by the department of Agriculture. The innovative urban garden grows various kinds of vegetables that Filipino families commonly carry on their tables such as eggplant, cabbage, squash, radish, sitaw, upo, saluyot, kangkong, ampalaya, tomato and lettuce.

The Urban Garden at the Santuario serves as a model for other urban communities, particularly in the surrounding area of our Shrine, and they can also duplicate this program and perhaps even enrich and expand. All that is required are some unused, idle land and people willing to work and to make it productive.  Promoters of urban gardening and all sorts of technical assistance are very much available. More than just providing a healthy and delicious source of food, the Urban Gardening can also be a source of additional income for the family.

The formal blessing of this novel Santuario response to a thorny multi-faceted challenge  was held last September 26, 2010 during the celebration of the Santuario Fiesta and the 350th Death Anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul with Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte herself as the guest of honor.

Santuario’s Computer Literacy Program

Roland R. Esguerra

Click… browser… chat… internet… Microsoft Office… Windows 7… YouTube… Facebook… are some common terminologies for the youth and even for the oldies these days.

Many of our young people today are very much aware of the technological advancement and even own some gizmos that to some, are an indication somewhat of social status. What about the others, the children who have not even used a computer ever?

The Santuario initiated a computer literacy program that aims to teach the less fortunate youngsters. They started with the youth from the communities nearby and others who simply wanted to learn, refresh and “be aware”.

It is developed to equip those interested among our youth with enough knowledge to keep them updated on the technology. The program started last October 9 and will run through the second week of December.

The program was divided into three classes. On Saturdays, the high school level has the 1 pm to 3 pm time slot followed by the elementary level with the 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm time slot. On Sundays, at 10:30 am to 12:30 pm the college level and others interested will have their turn at learning basic and advanced Microsoft Office applications and from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm basic computer knowledge and troubleshooting will be tackled.

The program also incorporates communications training and practiced during the course of the classes. Competent trainers facilitate the program and are well oriented to help the participants.

The St. Vincent Medical and Dental Clinic (SVMDC) will inaugurate its 1st year anniversary on September 26, 2010. Volunteer doctors headed by Dra. Teresita Agda, MD and other members of the management team including Dra. Mercy Agustin, MD and Ms. Norma Manalili as coordinator, among others. Activities planned for September 26, 2010 (Sunday) is a Thanksgiving Mass at 7:30 am where all volunteer dentists, paramedics, as well as the patients who have benefited from this program will be invited. During the mass, all will be acknowledged for their generosity and participation in sharing their time and resources and for the services they rendered in helping alleviate the physical condition of the poor among us.

Then the blessing of a better appointed clinic will be done after the mass to be followed by a medical mission without any fanfare. Various health awareness workshops on diabetes, dengue, and infectious diseases by our volunteer specialists from 1:00pm-3:00pm will follow.

The medical team considers this occasion a thanksgiving to God for the many blessings received through the prayers and intercession of St. Vincent de Paul through people’s generosity. Through this effort, it is fervently hoped that the clinic will grow and expand to continue serving more indigent patients in the community.

Seminary Scholarship Program

by Sem. Eugenio Navida Jr., CM

The celebration of the 350th death anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louis de Marillac  attests to the continuation of the legacy of these two great saints. This is a year-long celebration for the whole Vincentian Family worldwide. The Santuario de San Vicente de Paul keeps this legacy by starting yet another program, the Santuario de San Vicente Scholarship Program. This scholarship program aims to help poor but deserving students who would become future leaders and sharers of hope to others. The Santuario draws its inspiration from our Patron, St. Vincent himself, who during his adolescent years, was eager to finish his studies. Unfortunately, his poor family could not afford to send him to school. It was through the benevolence of a certain rich man, Monsieur de Comet, that the young Vincent was able to go to school.  His studies became the doorway for his future ministry in serving the poor.  Similarly, with this scholarship program,  the Santuario hopes to  be able to help poor but deserving students to fulfill their dreams. Currently, the program is serving three students who are taking technical courses in college. These students are also given values and human formation, and English proficiency tutorial sessions by the Pre-Internal Seminarians from St. Vincent Seminary.  They also serve as working students in the Santuario on Sundays and special events.

At present, the Santuario de San Vicente Scholarship program has only Fr. Mario Colina, CM as its sponsor. The Santuario is presently looking for generous sponsors who will share in its dream to continue its efforts and commitment in forming future leaders and in giving more opportunities for the poor but deserving students. It would also be an opportunity for the sponsors to share their blessings and defray the scholar’s expenses such as tuition fee and daily allowance.

However, the training will also be conducted on Sundays from 9:00am-12:00nn to allow others to attend the sessions.  These include the patients of our Sunday medical and dental clinic, senior citizens who regularly hold meetings every Sunday, and churchgoers who attend regular Sunday mass.

A special training will take place on September 26, the eve of the feast of St. Vincent de Paul,  from1:00pm-3:00pm. On  this day, the urban poor of Quezon City together with the people of the Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish, Payatas will join in the “Pilgrimage to the Santuario: A Walk for A Cause” and later attend the afternoon training sessions.

This livelihood project of the Santuario is in close collaboration with the Office of the Mayor of Quezon City in its desire to provide livelihood programs for all.

Youth Club at Santuario

The 14 students of the Institute of Formation, Fondacio Asia (IFF Asia) who came from Malaysia, Myanmar,  Laos, China, and Philippines facilitated a youth club to 19 teenagers and 20 children of Santuario de San Vicente de Paul last August 14, 2010 from 9 am to 12 noon held at the Columbary Lobby with the theme: “Let’s Hang Out!”  A club is a Fondacio youth activity with different components that combines fun, food, learning and prayer.  The day has been a fun-filled day for everyone both for the students of IFF Asia and the children and youth of Santuario.  Club will be a monthly activity at Santuario and the next club will be held on September 18, 2010.  The students are hopeful to have more youth to attend on this activity as it will help the youth to meet new friends, have fun, learn more about things that interest them and pray with others.
